The Algarve is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful regions in Portugal and offers a breathtaking variety of landscapes to discover. From the picturesque coastline to the tranquil hinterland, from cork oak forests and citrus plantations to untouched stretches of land, the Algarve has something for everyone. And it is precisely this diversity that you will experience on this rally starting from the 5* Hotel Real Marina in Olhão. Explore the beautiful coastline of the Ria Formosa, an extensive lagoon area that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Discover the authentic towns of Tavira and Sao Bras and immerse yourself in the pristine hinterland around the Sao Miguel mountain, where time seems to stand still.
Route
Tour profile / level 2
You cycle on good natural roads, asphalted side and main roads or on newly constructed cycle paths with some challenging climbs and descents.
Day 1: Olhão
Individual arrival in Olhão (Hotel Real Marina 5*). Personal welcome, bike handover and tour information.
Day 2: Olhão – Tavira – Olhão, approx. 62 km
You cycle inland from Olhão via Quelfes and Moncarapacho to Tavira. Fine white villas with red roofs and curved balconies, the charming old town and the lively fishing port on the riverbank form a delightful contrast. The route continues on cycle paths through Santa Luzia and Pedras d’el Rei to Fuseta. There you can take a break on the harbor promenade and watch the fishermen at work. You then return to Olhão via the largest active fishing port in the Algarve.
Day 3: Olhão – Quinta do Lago – Faro – Olhão, approx. 58 km
Today you cycle in an arc around Faro to the "Golden Triangle". You pass the Ribeiro de Lourenço river valley, cycle through orange plantations and reach the luxury resort of Quinta do Lago. You cycle through the Ria Formosas nature reserve on a natural path to the offshore island of Ilha do Faro. You then cycle through the village of Montenegro to the capital of the Algarve, Faro. Visit the historic old town before embarking on the short return journey to Olhão.
Day 4: Olhão – Azinheiro – San Miguel – Olhão, approx. 43 km
Today’s tour takes you into the interior of the Algarve. There are many small villages here, which convey the charm of Portuguese country life in their originality. Through a sparsely populated, unspoiled area with little traffic, the route climbs up to São Miguel, the second highest mountain in the Algarve. A fantastic view of the hills of the Serra to the north and over the coast awaits you. Then it’s a relaxed downhill ride through the idyllic hinterland back to Olhão.
Day 5: Olhão – Montemor – Pereiro – Olhão, approx. 40 km
Today’s tour takes you through the unspoiled hinterland - as there are only a few cafés along the way, we recommend that you take provisions with you and enjoy a picnic in the countryside. You drive past orange and vegetable plantations and the Quinta de Ana Velha, one of the largest exporters of ornamental plants in the Algarve. The route gradually leads up to Pereiro and then past the Cerro de Cabeça hill (fit cyclists can make a detour to the viewpoint) and then leisurely down to Estiramantens. You return to the hotel via Quelfes and through the historic old town of Olhão.
Day 6: Olhão – Santa Bárbara de Nexe – São Lourenço – Olhão, approx. 53 km
Today you cycle back into the hinterland to the small village of Santa Bárbara de Nexe, with its small village square and 400-year-old church. You then cycle downhill towards the church of São Lourenço near Almancil. This small church was one of the few buildings to survive the 1755 earthquake undamaged. You cycle back to the hotel through the pine forests of Ludo, past extensive plantations and salt pans.
Day 7: Olhão – São Brás de Alportel – Estoi – Olhão, approx. 51 km
Today’s route starts through the tranquil hinterland with its numerous almond, fig and carob trees. The route climbs steadily uphill through the hilly landscape to Azinheiro, then downhill through gnarled cork oak groves to the lively provincial town of São Brás de Alportel, at the foot of the Serra do Caldeirão. The world’s best cork material is harvested there and processed in one of the last cork oak factories in the region. Via Estoi, with its beautiful village square and the impressive church "Igreja des Sao Martinho", the route leads back to the coast to Olhão.
