from/to Porto St.Stefano

Tuscany Bike & boat map

Route

Tour profile - Level 2-3

The cycling stages require the participant to have a certain basic level of fitness, which should be acquired through regular cycling. The daily stages of 20 to 45 km with 200 - 700 meters altitude difference lead partly through hilly and mountainous terrain. Longer climbs are also ridden, but pushing is allowed. The roads are mainly asphalted, but gravel paths are also used. Helmets are mandatory on the bike tours. Please bring your own well-fitting helmet. Rental helmets are available in limited numbers (reservation required).

This tour is primarily designed as a guided group tour. After prior consultation with our tour guides and selection of a suitable route, there is in principle nothing to prevent individual cycling. Instead of a bike tour, a half or full day can be spent on the ship at any time. The daily program depends on the weather and the captain’s instructions.

Day 1: Porto St. Stefano

Individual arrival to Porto St. Stefano, a wonderful, lively harbor town on the north side of the Monte Argentario peninsula. Check-in on your ship at 6 pm. If you arrive earlier, you are welcome to store your luggage on board as early as 2pm. Strolling through the old town, built in the medieval Borgo style, whose house facades are predominantly in beige and rosé, the Italian vacation feeling promptly sets in. The Fortezza Spagnola, built in the 17th century above the town and once used as a defensive fortress, is also worth a detour.

Day 2: Porto St.Stefano – Orbetello – Talamone, approx. 40 km

From Porto St. Stefano, your first bike ride will take you first to Orbetello. With a bit of luck you can admire the spectacular gathering of flamingos in the WWF natural oasis Laguna di Orbetello. Your bike ride will then take you to the ruins of the fortified Roman town of Cosa and later through the Duna Feniglia nature reserve, whose beautiful pine forest will enchant you. Once back in Porto St. Stefano, the Atlantis will be waiting for you. Crossing to the port town of Talamone.

Day 3: Talamone – Magliano di Toskana – Talamone, approx. 45 km

After breakfast we start on a tour through rolling landscapes characterized by grape vines and olive groves. Past the Poggio Perotto Lake you arrive in the medieval town of Magliano di Toskana. The picturesque town with its striking city gates and walkable city walls invites you to linger. On the way back to Talamone, whose bay is very much appreciated by kiters and windsurfers, the beautiful Tuscan landscape shows its most beautiful side once again. Before dinner on board you will be  invited to a tasting of typical Tuscan wines.

Day 4: Talamone – Porto Azzuro, approx 20 km

This morning is used for the crossing to Elba, on which you can get an introduction to sailing in favourable winds and set sail together. After Sicily and Sardinia, Elba is the third largest island in Italy and impresses with its charm, lush nature and rich history. After a light lunch on board, you go ashore. Your afternoon tour through the varied island leads to Capoliveri and along a wonderful panoramic road. In the evening take the opportunity for a stroll through the charming little harbour town Porto Azzuro.

.

Day 5: Porto Azzuro – Enfola Bay, approx. 35 km

A somewhat longer cycle tour from Porto Azzuro to the north of the island of Elba awaits you. After the coffee break in Rio nell’ Elba you will arrive at one of the most impressive view points of the trip. At Voltereio you look at the bay of Portoferreio, the capital of the island. After lunch it is only a few kilometres to the beautiful bay of Enfola.

Day 6:Patresi – Marina di Campo, approx. 30 km

Today the queen’s stage awaits you! You cross the island by bicycle. After visiting the mountain villages of Marciana you get to the highest point of the tour at Monte Perone. Then it’s only downhill to the village of San Piero in Campo, where you can enjoy a delicious lunch with a view onto your boat. After the tour you take a refreshing bath – directly from your ship. Then the sails are set with the destination: Island Giglio. The Isola Giglio is located in the very south of the Tuscan Archipelago and is a scenic jewel. Mountains, forests, untouched nature, crystal clear sea!

Day 7: Island Giglio – Porto St. Stefano, approx. 15 km

You go ashore in Campese in the west of the island. The destination of your today’s cycle tour is the medieval town of Giglio Castello, enthroned high on the island of Giglio like an impregnable castle. A fast descent takes you to Giglio Porto. Enjoy the last cruise on board the Atlantis as you set sail in the direction of Porto St. Stefano. A celebratory evening meal in the company of fellow travelers, crew and guides offers a great atmosphere in which to enjoy the last evening together reflecting on the week.

Day 8: Porto St. Stefano

Departure at 9am after breakfast followed either by an extended stay in Tuscany or an individual journey home.

    Additional information

    Helmet obligation
Helmets are compulsory on the bike tours. Please bring your own well-fitting helmet. A limited number of rental helmets are available on the ship (advance reservation required).

    Children
Basically, we believe that only children with good stamina and a minimum age of 10 years can manage the bike tours under their own power. Please note that rental bikes can only be provided for children over 1.50 m tall.

Special features of the harbors and anchorages
Since our sailing ships are too big for small fishing ports, in many places you will spend the night at anchor. This also means that your cycling day often starts with a crossing in a dinghy. Stepping on and off a tallship requires surefootedness and a certain degree of agility. Trip leaders and crew will be happy to assist you in boarding the vessel if necessary. In general, wind and swell (swell on the surface of the water) have a major impact on the timing of our sailing trips.

    Own bicycles
Please note that only normal trekking/touring/city bikes may be brought along. It is NOT possible to bring your own e-bikes - these must be rented if required; subject to availability.
